Faith is just believing without evidence. In other words... idiocy.

Shotgun, Stereo, or comera mic, the quality for all of them is bad lol

@optmyst Are you by any chance running test in a quiet room? If so it will pick up the sound in that quiet room, and if the only sound in the room is the camera running, well then there you have it!
I've seen people testing video for this hissing noise and its not real world testing. Only need a shot gun mics were you would have distracting sounds around and need to focus in on subject.
You would not need it in a room per say.

Thanks for taking the time out to even do this test. I bought a second hand one of these mics last week for my Canon XM2, but it came without instructions. This is one of the few better ones I've seen. Thanks!

I only want to use Canon products.

I'm using the same mic for the same camera, and get a terrible hiss. any suggestions??

I don't get a hiss at all - it's either a problem with your specific mic or your specific camera.

What are the differences between the settings? Does the shotgun setting pick up everything (including ambient noise)? and does the stereo setting cuts out ambient noise except for sound directly in front of it? I'm not 100% sure on what each setting does.
btw thanks for posting the test!

Shotgun gets what's directly ahead. Stereo gets 90 degrees or 270, depending on which of the two settings you have it on. Shotgun really works - makes a huge difference.

I don't know anything about the RODE, but I do like the DM-50 and have no complaints. And I like it for convenience (plugs directly in the hotshoe), and the different recording modes.
