This is me reciting one of my pieces of writing.

it was the end of september and i had finally settled into things
then you came into my life
everything was well
i saw it as perfect
long distance is never desirable
but we were working through it
things were great
we talked daily
communication is key
we were both doing our own things
and we were both anchors for each other
-holding each other down, keeping us grounded and sane-
months later you return home from tour
weary and hurting and unsure of what to do
it took months to find work
you were without a phone
then without a computer
we barely talked
i visited when i could
but you never could really come here on your own
you should have tried harder
you're smart — you could have figured something out
but you didn't
and the last time I saw you was Valentines Day Weekend
things were good
we were able to go on a date by the money my mother gave us to spend
she said "go have fun on me. enjoy yourselves"
she's such a sweet person.
things were great.
I remember getting in my car and loading it back up after a weekend in your cigarette smoke filled place
it's not really a house nor an apartment
it's half a house?
I dunno...it doesn't really matter
I said goodbye to your stepmother
and your father, although he never had talked to me
or even really acknowledged my existence
you followed me out to my car
in your ripped hoodie
you leaned over into my car and gave me a goodbye kiss
and as I pulled out of your driveway you wave and turn around
you turned your back as I drove off
only to turn your back on our relationship a couple of months after
whether you needed to "find yourself" or not
you left us
you left me
you didn't want to take the journey of finding yourself with anyone but yourself
a relationship is about growing together
compromises and promises that are kept
love and compassion
honesty and selflessness
you told me later in an email
which is the only way you allow communication with me
"I understand that relationships are about compromise but I suppose that I am supposed to be alone because I don't think I should have to."
What a cop out.
"It's not you, it's me."
But then your snide remarks really hurt even more
"I'm the big bad wolf here. You're not in the wrong at all."
Maybe it's just because we're solely communicating through cold hard text on a screen.
But that was your choice. I had begged for the last 2 months of our relationship
and even after that
for us to talk face to face
but you won't give our relationship even that - a simple face to face discussion
we only live 3 hours away — you can meet me halfway in manhattan
or we could video chat
but no
we just emailed
I gave everything
and I feel like you barely gave anything
I feel like the words were like glass
they seemed sturdy by looking at it
but with closer examination
they were fragile and empty
with nothing to back them up
and cracked under the slightest amount of pressure
and here comes that famous line
actions speak louder than words
you told me you love me
but why didn't you try harder?
