The pre-Amtrak predecessor to the Southwest Chief was the Santa Fe Super Chief (all sleeping car train) and the El Capitan (all coach train). Both were beautiful, great trains. The Super Chief was considered to be one of the greatest passenger trains in the United States. It did not go through Amarillo. I believe its route between Garden City and Lamar was the fastest passenger train route segment in the U.S. at that time.
On the more positive side, there seems to be a strong push now for expanded Amtrak service, especially in Texas. Hopefully some good will come of it. So sad that Amtrak's always a political hot potato. Citizens want more service, however, they'd have to be willing to pay for it, tax wise.
Wow, that's really something. I believe that the Original Southwest Chief run by Santa Fe Rail Road did have a Stop in Amarillo. Hell the Railroads built this town, now only the old folks remember the trains. There was talk back in the '80s of expanding Amtrack service to Amarillo, but I do not think that the big whigs wanted it to compete with their airport. Sure would be sweet to have a train between Dallas and the Mountains though.

That should be great if Amtrak can someday do Service to the West Coast without going through San Antonio from Ft. Worth.
