another low-income hotel is turned over for redevelopment in time for the anticipated influx of wealthy tourists visiting vancouver for the 2010 olympics. this video has audio from the rally, with photos from the downtown eastside. people are literally being thrown out into the streets with nowhere to go - further evidence that the capitalist economic system creates poverty and homelessness.

Has anyone actually seen the insides of one of these places? Some friends and me walked into I think it was the hotel Regent in the late 90's.

Anyhow all the rooms on the floor share a common washroom. The bathtub had 3 pounds of deficate in it and the toilets were plugged with needles.

Rats and cockroaches were out of control and the smell was out of this world. I added to that by vomiting up my 5 or 6 beers i had. Bulldozer them down,they are a disgrace and a waste of land.

I am sick and tired of this government throwing money away into the olympics, it will only bring benefits to huge corporations and will leave the city broke!

I don't even remember writing that. What a stupid comment. Though many native leaders have been known to steal money from their communities it is not the main reason for homelessness in Vancouver. I still believe that if the conservatives did not scrap the 5 billion to improve native living standards, if spent correctly, would have drastically reduced native homelessness in Canada.

I sure as hell hope that's true as well! The gag law is by far the most ridiculous law I've ever seen. Especially at this day and age. I was outraged when I heard of it. I'm not a protester but if I was and I wanted to post signs on MY property to bash the olympics I should have every right to.
