2-screen video installation (single channel version), for Newcastle Civic Centre. Commisioned by Northern Architecture for the Hadrian Awards ceremony, 6th September 2007.
"The Texture of Democracy" is a site-specific dual-screen video installation for the Bewick Room, Newcastle Civic Centre. Based on video footage of abstracted and perhaps overlooked details of the building, saturated with colour and graphic purity, the film explores the textures of the building as it empties for the working day, leaving behind its human functions as it becomes a brooding space of its own. The soundtrack is based on samples taken from in and around the Civic Centre building, processed and shaped to match the textures on screen. Thanks to Rory Dickenson for sound recordings, Polly at Northern Architecture, and to the civic centre staff.
