had to come back and look at this again, and now I find I have another question. At about 0:45, we see a brief shot of an instrment with six necks. I can't see the strings. We see it again at about 3:26, being played by the man leaning against the tree. It looks like a calabash with six poles converging at the bottom. There is no skin over the calabash, so the bridge must be on the other side. What is that?

@leftysergeant:
Hiya Leftie - Its called the Dan or N'dan, and he learned to play it form his father Samandji Traore.
It is a six string instrument and it is traditionally used to welcome back travellers.
Hope you are well.
Peace....

Great music and video. I am learning quite a bit about Malian music these days and find it fascinating. I do have one question, though, about the instrument seen here. Is that a kora or ngoni? Both sound a lot alike to my ear. I don't think the guitar will ever totally replace either.

@leftysergeant : Glad you liked the music.
The instrument is a Donso N'Goni, differing in shape from the 'Cricket Bat' style which is known as N'Goni or N'Goni Ba and varies in size from 18 inches, to the bass N'Goni which is huge at around 40 inches.
Donso N'Goni is plucked with the fingers like a Kora, while the N'Goni is played with a plectrum. All can be amplified with small bridge mics.
The bands albums are quite amazing - you should try to hear them.
Happy listening my friend!
