I never could tell why the city was european, and only now realise that most North Americans live in spacious cities where an automobile is needed to get around.

I was brought up in a Victorian era styled city, Sydney -and for years had wondered why San Francisco was so labled.
.
I would add that the thirty-nine hills help a lot too.
