Sure has changed from the 90s (PhotoShop)... Nice demonstration, patient and wonderful voice...you'd make a great teacher!

Im not sure what version of after effects this tut uses but in cs5.5 this process is much simpler. You can just use the brush with silhouette luma and write on. Paint over the vine. Then cut copy paste the effects paint layer created to a new solid. Then do alpha invert of the solid. You still have to cut out all the vines in photoshop or illustrator first though if you want them to animate together like that.

in the left side of 'active camera' have a buton to turn the background to transparent!

Hey.. After pasting the mask onto brushposition - how the hell did U get 3 keyframes from just drawing a mask onto the original file. I only get the first frame when I paste into brushposition. Where have I gone wrong ???
