I believe my snake is egg bound right now - but cant find a competent vet here that understands what i am asking them. She is 10 years old, quite the old lady, and has never been bred. She has only ever laid a small clutch of slugs once before in her life, and now she has stopped eating and has a very visible bulge near her sex glad. I know she is old, but I'm terrified that she is going to die from the egg. She hasn't eaten in nearly 8 months, and the bulge has been visable for at least 2!

is she feeling at 6:09?

thank you SO MUCH for posting this! i had a snake who was egg-bound up until today, but thankfully the eggs (slugs) were within 3-4 inches of her cloaca. i was able to insert a sexing probe around the egg, and then slide the egg out. there were 6 retained slugs in total. if anyone is interested, i can post photos on photobucket of what was stuck inside her. VERY interesting, and very relieving. i was so upset about her being egg-bound, but now her prognosis looks good!

What is a pethiticuist?
Did this snake ever experience any recurring egg binding?

The snake was intentionally not bred this year... as part of the recovery protocol.

how much did this surgery cost?

Dr. Slack did it in exchange for an animal from the owner. Another reptile, but I forget what exactly. My guess would be $250 to $350 here in Maine, if you had to pay for it.

Very interesting video, and very well done! I am looking to be a vet in the near future, so I was very interested in watching this video. I have a couple questions but I don't know if they can be answered because I am not sure who actually posted the video. But for the egg that was broken does the oviduct need to be cleaned out? How long does it take for the snakes skin/scales to heal, do they heal over a period of time or is it just when they shed their skin? Thanks.

The snake was moving around nicely 10 minutes after surgery. As I remember, Dr. Slack's information during the shoot, internal layers begin healing at once. Full healing will occur with subsequent sheds. He had opened the oviduct so he did "clean it out".
