Crochet Solid Rectangle

Written by Teresa Richardson

Video Tutorial: Crochet Solid Rectangle

The starting length can be any length to adapt to various size afghans.

Foundation: There are two ways to start. 1. I used the foundation single crochet, with 12 stitches in the video.
2. You can also use a chain if you prefer. which will be a chain of 13. You will be working around the chain.

Round 1: Chain 3, Work 2 DC in the end stitch. Chain 2, Work 3 more DC in the same end stitch. Work 1 DC in each of the next 10 stitches, Work 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, all in the end stitch. Work 1 DC in each of the next 10 stitches. Work 3 DC in the end stitch. SC in the beginning stitch to join.

Round 2: CH 3, Work 1 DC in the same space below. Work 1 DC in each of the next 3 DC, In the corner, work 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC all in the same space. Work 1 DC in each of the next 16 DC, In the corner, work 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC all in the same space. Work 1 DC in each of the next 3 DC. In the corner, work 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC all in the same space. Work 1 DC in each of the next 16 DC. Work 2 DC in the next space, SC to join with the beginning stitch.

Round 3: CH 3, Work 1 DC in the same space below. Work 1 DC in each of the next 7 DC, In the corner, work 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC all in the same space. Work 1 DC in each of the next 20 DC, In the corner, work 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC all in the same space. Work 1 DC in each of the next 7 DC. In the corner, work 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC all in the same space. Work 1 DC in each of the next 20 DC. Work 2 DC in the next space, SC to join with the beginning stitch.

Continue on making your rectangle as large as you want it to be. It will continue to get larger as long as you are adding the 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC in the corner. If the edges start to wave, you may be crocheting to loosely. If your corners start to curl up, you may need another stitch in the corner so you can modify to a 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC in your corners.

  • No, I am trying to make a rectangular basket. Do you think is going to work?

I am crocheting it, I haven't got time to do much of it. I have to work on some stuff for college, but as soon as I get the chance I continue. I just don't see it flipping up. It scares me a little lol.

  • @almonds2knitt If you continue increasing in the corners, it will lay flat.

  • Thank you so much T. I've been looking for this for forever. My mom wants me to make her rectangles so she can use them for the sugar packets. Hopefully comes out good when I try it.

    Have a nice day.

  • @almonds2knitt Are you making a little pouch ?

  • what size hook your using?

  • I am using a large size hook for the demonstration. You can use any size hook.

  • Thank you, thank you Teresa! I got it, but only because your videos. Pat

  • Yes, I agree. That is why I stopped increasing when you did in the video. I see some folding happening on the corners, but will see what happens in the end. I might end up taking some rows apart because it might be too big, lol. But if I achieve what I am hoping to achieve, I will let you know about it, so if someone asks in the future you can answer.

Now I have to go study. I have finals in math next with.

I hope you have a great day, keep up your great videos, you give me good ideas.

  • Thank you so much for your wonderful tutorials! I am refreshing my knowledge and you make it so easy to do.

  • @kellypinklily You can use the single crochet. You may need to modify the corner increases and use less for the shorter stitch.

  • Hi Teresa. Ty for your videos, they are easy and helpful.

I have a question: do you know how to make darts with crochet, to give a tailored appearance to tops? I would love any help you may have as I have searched quite a bit with no success for information. Thanks again!
