when I was a kid, there were always at least one of those spider-kindergartens in our backyard :D
and I did the exact same thing until the mother showed up
at that point I ran away and wait until she left the babies alone again :3

That's excellent. Good to know my humble effort has been useful and educational too. Would be great to see the photos. Yesterday in the garden I saw the first few baby (small) spiders making their new webs.

Although the spiders are very common and awhile ago I saw one shedding its skin (didn't know they did this) I have only ever seen the one nest. I have seen some heavily pregnant spiders though hanging around in their webs.
I only just discovered the spiders name: It took a dose of tonsilitis and visit to the doctors to find that out (thanks to a BBC gardening magazine)

Nice to have comment(s) that don't involve kiling the little beasties... :)
I recently saw a 'parent' version of one of these shedding its skin, mainly legs. I tried video capturing it but it didn't come out well enough to post here :(
