Footage contributed by Sooty 1312. This film may not be copied without the express written consent of the operator of this channel. Port of Spain was not only a quaint West Indian town as many people of the time thought. By the architecture shown in this short it's easy to see that Port of Spain was also a very genteel and cultured capital city with buildings and public services to rival that of any city in the United States or Great Britain. From Queen's Hall to the Victoria Institute Port of Spain boasted a quality of life that is envied today. To reflect that, I've used some classical piano in this sequence. I hope it conveys to the viewer what a delight the Savannah was on a quiet Sunday afternoon.

  • I wish Trini was peaceful again when everybody was.

  • A life time ago.. these videos are great and a reminder of a peaceful time long gone. Thanks for posting these series 'Time out in Trinidad'

  • @curtiss744 So true, I am from the last of that peaceful generation. I was born in the late 70s and grew up in the 80s and my family and I would alternate going to the beach in Carenage (which I hated because the water was so dirty and filled with seaweeds). the cinema - Globe. the zoo and Memorial park for picnics, on a Saturdays with our neighbours. Sad to see Trinidad now- so much crime and even the Carnival is nothing special anymore. bikinis bikinis every year.

  • the magnificent 7 is the 7 mansions in Trinidad right? .... I just hope they don't ever tear them down.... they look so worn and old now. :( funny how they would tear down buildings that are 100's of years old but the new houses that fall apart, they give to others.... such a shame :(

  • This was when trinidad was peaceful.....now everyday in trinidad is killing!!!

  • @fuzzybearphoto Lol, for real. Traffic was actually two then...

  • @curtiss744. You don't see Memorial Park because this clip shows the areas to the west and north of the Savannah and the park is to the south east opposite the national museum . I don't know the date that it was constructed but I believe Memorial park probably existed when this film was made.

  • Awesome video although I was not born in the 50's I did grow up in Trinidad in the 70's and I did remember going to the memorial park on Sundays with my mom that was something I looked out for the savannah stil l looks the same I did not see memorial park or was it constructed during this time period somebody please inform me

  • The area is much the same as it was. I couldn't help but notice the cars going in the "wrong" direction. Traffic around the Savannah is one way now and clockwise.
