Sri Lanka has achieved economic and financial assistance to the tune of more than 150 billion rupees following the Iranian tour of President Rajapakse. Eight MOU's providing this assistance were signed in the presence of the Presidents of the two countries at the official residence of the Iranian leader.
Sri Lanka and Iran have issued a joint statement following the President's tour of Iran. The two sides stressed their determination to further promote mutual cooperation in political, economic, trade, cultural and scientific fields. Both sides expressed satisfaction on the agreements and MOU's reached between the two countries on power supply, irrigation and oil refinery in Sri Lanka while further strengthening cooperation. The Sri Lankan President called on the supreme leader of Iran Ayatollah Seyyed Ali-Kahamenei. The two sides condemned terrorism as a phenomenon, which is increasingly threatening the world. They stressed the need for international cooperation to deal with the route causes of this problem. Sri Lanka and Iran agreed to adhere to the principals of the regional institutions including the South Asian Association Organization and Colombo plan and support the enhancement of bilateral economic cooperation in tourism, trade and investment. Both sides agreed to welcome and support various initiatives to develop cooperation in Asia through the inter-linkage of existing regional arrangements including economic cooperation organization and ASEAN. President Rajapakse thanked the government and people of Iran for the warm hospitality accorded to him and his delegation during the visit. The Iranian President accepted an invitation extended by his Sri Lankan counterpart to visit the island in March/April 2008 in line with the regular exchange of visits between the top ranking officials of the two countries. Both countries were deeply concerned over violence against Palestinian people and hoped that the differences among different groups will be resolved amicably. They stressed the need to consolidate national unity and understanding, peaceful co-existence and preservation of stability, security and peace in Lebanon. They also emphasised the need to preserve territorial integrity of Iraq. The two sides were concerned over the escalation of insecurity and instability in Afghanistan and expressed support for the progress made in the country.
