The Death of Analog Television has come. WMTV-NBC 15 in Madison shut down its analog transmitter on February 16th at 11:59 PM Central Standard Time, and in doing so, ended the era of smacking the top of your television to get good reception.

  • Kudos to WMTV for a classic farewell to the analog era, with a live shot of the American flag and the Indian Head test pattern. Apparently other analog channels last night (Feb. 17) did an unannounced, hard, cold shutdown.

Was that the Wisconsin statehouse where the flagpole was? The test pattern was indeed a nice touch; I remember that thing scaring the hell out of me as a little kid. My YouTube channel has two videos parodying that image; check it out.

  • @bwc1976 The best I've seen was from Pittsburgh

    .

A 5 minute long retrospective to say goodbye to analog

  • I've seen a lot of comments about the test pattern scaring kids! That thing scared the living crap out of me as well. Sometimes the national anthem at the end as well. I have no clue why! Maybe because you knew that there was not gonna be any more noise to fill in the environment. Weird stuff that it happened to a lot of kids as well.

  • A small part of that static at the end is actually the noise caused by the big bang.

  • Just like the old days, when TV went off.

  • @everythinguwanted At least I don't pay a monthly fee for my indoor antenna- if I had to do that, I wouldn't have it!

  • @eyeh8nbc I love it when the digital picture freezes and either they don't care or cant'f fix it for HOURS!!!!

I have ComCast and Ive seen it where the entire digital spectrum is absolutely frozen on a video still for each station FOR HOURS!!!! Thats what I like best about dig.

  • I'm glad I'm not alone, the indian test image scares the crap out of me too - I had this dream where I'm in some very grassy and bright landscape inside a house, and there's just one TV in the living room that I go into from the kitchen and it's playing this, and I'm the only person on the face of the planet. at this point I realise the gravity is really low because it's 100 million years in the past when the earth was much smaller and the continents were all one, and then I wake up in a sweat
