Hey--he's not a scientist, give the kid some slack. Most people never NEED to know that Theory means something different in the academic context! All he needs to know is that "Hypothesis" is to science what "Theory" is to casual conversation, and "Theory" is to science what "A collection of Facts" would be in conversational English--if we had a single word for that...

I wish there were more people in the world like you. When you're not sure about something you ask for an explanation from someone who you think is knowledgeable and who might point you in the right direction. My hat's off to you. Oh, and "I'm not gonna be a creationist about it." is a great phrase. I'll try to use it more in everyday speech. It might catch on. :)

If you didn't know already:
All galaxies are moving away in a direction (unless influenced otherwise) - going back in time the galaxies go backwards and all known matter meets up at one point in space.
This is concrete enough for me.

I commend you for asking questions.
Just make sure you ask the right ones and accept the right answers even if you don't like them.
Also, as many have pointed out before me, getting caught-up on what the word "theory" really means will do wonders.

Why are you commenting in a condescending tone? Its not like I asked him "in 10 words or less what is the big bang theory", and further more what gives you the right to judge me?

No hypocisy here but perhaps my tone was a bit strong. After all, at least your mind is open enough to make these enquiries.
However, I asked you a question: Why ask a practitioner of one branch of science about another that's totally unrelated. You'll get better answers elswhere. As the great man himself said : " I debated astro physicists on this and they handed me my ass"

You do, just like I have the right to delete what you say. But i wont because that's being a douche.
Why? Because he knows his stuff and I'm allowed to ask him questions about his opinion on a subject matter that he obviously is well versed in.
