The beep and flashing light means there is a problem with the EFI firmware. Essentially meaning its bricked and needs a new logic board. I have the exact same problem and my macbook was out of warrenty! I decided to upgrade at the time but i still have the dead macbook at home and im thinking about trying to repiar myself at some point.

I currently have the same problem. I went to the apple store and they want to change me 400 pounds for the service and replacement of the motherboard. WTF?? Obviously i took my dead MBP back and I'm currently thinking about getting a windows computer. I don't know what to do, i want my mac back but it seems like a big waste to spend that amount of money in just a motherboard!

To the previous two comments. MY MBP died few days after I installed Lion.
It failed to sleep when I put to sleep, then when it used to wake up, the whole screen was darkened. Anyway, I'm using Windows now :\
I seem to have the same problem and computer. Is yours an early 2008 MBP?

Did you install OS Lion recently before your MBP died ? I had the same problem as you and so did another friend. Both of ours died after OS Lion installed
