I think he used a flood of his emotion to disable it somehow, by telling him his ex had cancer or something?? Not sure how that worked out but yeah I thought the same thing.

think of it this way: if you were an average movie goer, and not a fan of the comic who wanted the most realistic ending, would you want a giant squid to kill New York, or a massive splosion blamed on Dr. Manhattan?
