i was also at this race, in the stand that the tire went into...3 rows behind the first two victims...my father, uncle and 1 took off our shirts and ran to them to try and stop the bleeding...we were too late, they were died instantly. i was 11 and had horrible dreams for years...

That is a huge shunt for Fernandez and his right front wheel flew towards the grandstands. The three spectators were killed

One of the people who died was my grandpa. I always wanted to know the full story of what happened, since my mom doesn't like talking about it.

Having the crash at Michigan '98 that killed 3 spectators. Winning the Champcar races at Toronto '96 and Fontana '99 that claimed the lives of Jeff Krosnoff and Greg Moore respectively. Losing the 2000 CART championship on the last day of the season - though by comparison, that was nowhere near as serious. Anybody would be proud to have Adrian Fernandez' career record, but you certainly wouldn't want his luck...

@PhilipTheBigOne wow! I didn't realize this! I was at the michigan race when he crashed. His car stopped right in front of me after his turn 4 wreck. That was my seats. I didnt know most of his wins we're all bad news like this. Sad to hear this :(

@cornstar43 I remember this. My buddy and me we're sitting in the main grandstand between the start / finish line and turn 1 and I asked my buddy why they opened an empty grandstand a section over from the wreck. That stand was closed before the wreck. I didn't realize what happened at that time.

i never comment on youtube videos but i came across this tonight. i used to go to races with my mom for years - milwaukee, michigan, elkhart lake in particular. i was at this race as a 12 year old when this happened, it was the grandstand over from us, and i will never forget seeing the blood on the grandstand after it was evacuated. i was racing obsessed but it took me years to get back into the sport after this. why they didn't stop the race i'll never understand.
