Here is one of my own composed, classical-style song. Instrument is traditional Finnish "jouhikko"(bowed lyre), it´s made of birch, moosebone and cow´s horn. Strings are made of horse tailhair. I was last week teaching in a jouhikko-course, where students were making jouhikko´s and I made this jouhikko as modelpiece.
I was first recording the part1 and then getting it out of computer and same time playing part2 and getting the whole song on tape.
Sorry about the soundquality..

  • Thank you all for your nice comments!

It´s hard to say, is it easy or difficult to play it.. I find jouhikko pretty easy to play, but I know people(some of them are musically talented) who find it very difficult.

Maybe violin or guitar etc. players can play jouhikko very easily? I dont know..

Ballyvourney, you can by it from me ;) I make jouhikkos. Take a look at my homepage from my profile..Finnish only.. Hoping to have english version soon..

Before writing this comment, I watched your video around 20 times.

I was so amazed that I couldn't do anything other.

  • Minkäs vireisiä jouhikoita on nyt käytössä?

  • Astounding, very nice song.. Also I'd like to try to play that nice traditional instrument as long as I find it..somewhere ...

  • do you know any craftsman who makes this instrument or other bowed lyres? where did you get yours? i would really like to own one and learn to play it. i would be very thankful if you help me

  • saludos desde Chile. Me gusto muuuucho como tocas el jouhikko

greetings from Chile. I really like the way you play the jouhikko

  • How long did it take you to make this one?

Great music - but is this true you use only few notes? (I heard somewhere it is possible to play only six notes without changing hand's position - of course that depends on player's fingers lenght).

  • I have now seen some jouhikkoplayers here in youtube, need to say that you are number 1!

Please, post more!!!! Incredible ancient sound!

  • Did you read the description? He has half of the 'duo' recorded, and he starts it right at the beginning of the video. That's why it sounds like two, because there is, but only one is 'live.'

  • he doesnt seem to be playing it really

what I see and what I hear dont match in the same time... Im not sure if its a technical problem from utube

  • I was about to ask where you could get a Jouhikko from (They are near impossible to find in america, and I am not yet set up to build my own) but realized your answer below. How much do you sell for, and do you ship to the states?

You have amazing music, and if that is your handmade instrument, great craftsmanship as well!

    Keep it up!
