Often, Amtrak's AutoTrain arrives at its destination early (inasmuch as it operates very much like a freight and not a passenger train). While off-loading passengers is done in one movement at Lorton, Virginia (the station there is larger than the one at Sanford, Florida), it takes longer to off-load the auto-carriers (auto-racks), which must be broken down into units of five cars each. Here we see the arrival of the first set of auto-carriers at Lorton, Virginia on the sunny, summer morning of August 24, 2009. The switcher puts on a bit of a show with its smoke, and after these cars are fully set for off-loading, it will return to the consist for the next set.
