Amen to that! They've nothing to do with Ireland really. They were just the latest empire to invade our shores and enslave our people mentally as well as physically. This country's obsession with suffering and self deprecating nature stems directly from it's peoples' experiences with the catholic church.

The comments left here are ridiculous. I am surprised that some of the people who left them can actually write to be honest. This is about abuse in an organization called the Catholic Church. It is not about the past or about Catholics and Protestants who have a very good relationship in the Republic. It is not about colonization. To criticize the Catholic Church is not to criticize Ireland; they deserve to be criticized. They have treated us terribly. They are the first colonizers.

@ScourgeofInfidels You sound like you have human manners. Paedophiles find ways to get into a position of respect and power and then they abuse that. Many jobs attract them; teachers, clergymen, doctors etc. The problem here is the disgraceful reaction of the Catholic Church to the pain and suffering it caused many people. The unfortunate thing is that it many countries it is continuing. Shame on you for abusing that situation to advance your own racism.

The problem is that authoritarian religious culture attracts psychopathic types--people who crave power and exercise it over the vulnerable. Thank God that the church doesn't command the kind of blind respect anymore in society as it once did. Those priests who are bad people by nature thrived on that unquestionable respect. Worse still, the fear they cultivated was the biggest insult to Christ that anyone could have thought up. Shame on them all.
