The second skin essencially protects Ben from Ghostfreak's fatal version to sunlight. Ghostfreak's real form actually looks like a wraith-like genie with blue claws, decaying skin, and an exposed, upside-down skull with a single eye. I doubt that Ghostfreak's buddies at home even have a second skin, since they're in a world that's mostly in complete darkness.
