It turned out that the weekend of my backpack mobile trip to the Wa coast was the weekend of the North American QSO party - a good thing because 20 meters was full of contesters with great stations looking for new contacts. This clip is K7HV working K5KA 2236 UTC on Aug 4, 2007.

  • I just heard about the death of Ken, K7KA. I ran into Ken again during the SS CW on 2230, 7 Nov- 09 on 20. I was /QRP and worked him for OK. At the end o the QSO, he added a comment along the lines of "FB QRP QSO AGN TU" - I thought it odd that a big-time contester would slow down their rate to say something like that to someone he barely knew. Now that I heard about his passing, I realize why he might have been OK with pausing to give out an encouraging word - 73 ES TU KEN DE K7HV ..

  • !Ocapa Hermano Jorge! puedo entender todo estimado colega. Gracias por su amistad. He visto tus videos aqui en youtube tambien... Nos vemos en las bandas con QRP cada via... 73 de john - k7hv

  • The antenna is a end-fed longwire up about 25 ft and running about 50 ft to another tree -see the accompanying video in this playlist where I give a "tour" of the station and show the antenna. I was quite comfortable: note that I had a folded wool poncho for a cushion and a custom made "couch" fashioned from driftwood; it supported my lower back just fine during hours of ops over several days.

  • Ken was a good friend of mine. I first met him in 1986 and he was a big contester then. He and his friends would meet up on 2m chasing DX when I lived in Bartlesville, OK where he lived. Rock solid guy, as good as the come. I still miss him.

  • Great job, way 2 go!

  • Nice video. What was the antenna? Is it comfortable sitting like that?

  • no se sabras español pero te envidio hermano ... te felicito saludos jorge lu5ddx
