we use strads. depending on the number of moves on the ship. and yes we do get some post panamax ships. we have 35 cranes in the whole port. 9 of them are the largest in the world that reach 26 containers across(boom length) and we have 14 more that reach 22 across. We average between 50 to 60 moves an hour. we have a two breakbulk cargo terminals and 1 cruise ship terminal and a coal terminal. heck, even our medium sized older cranes can handle big ships. but we still get our buts kicked by NY!
It's all about mastery. It's not really boring. It's very ZEN. I almost go into a trance where my subconscious does most of the work--"to become one with the machine" so to speak. When I get bored I just think about my next overseas vacation or the sorry state of my investment portfolio.
Impressive. Are you guys using straddles or trucks? How many strads to a crane? I'll bet you service a lot of nice new post-panamax size ships. Unfortunately we get smaller, older crappy ships frequenting our ports--rusty cell guides, shitty twistlocks and the like. We are small fry compared to you guys. How many container cranes in your port? We have 16 total in the port of Melbourne. I'll have a look on google earth at the port of Hampton.
One crane in my terminal moved 405 containers in an 8 hr shift. An Australian record I believe. And yes, there was twin lifting. Do you guys ever get close to crazy figures like that?
great video, I used to operate overhead cranes inland for the railway but you guys have a much longer in and out, great eye and the ground man loading the trailer if he is good makes your job easy.
