Crew turned satellite tracking off?

The Arctic Sea has been missing now for more than two weeks after reports that it had been attacked by pirates. As Russian vessels continue to look for the ship, many wonder what happened. A maritime expert says there's a possibility that crew members on the ship turned the satellite tracking off.

I meant no network for GSM standard phones, meaning no possible tracking on sea. However most modern PDAs have GPS built into them.

Im not sure there needs to be a network in the middle of the atlantic when all the phones nowadays have GPS tracking?

There is no "network" in the middle of the atlantic. However, your point is correct. No one wanted the ship to be found before its dump of guilt somewhere in the sea. Not nuclear weapons, but most probably nuclear waste... That's why the military were involved in the search, I believe.

Same with the *missing* plane not too long ago - how many mobile phones would have been on board that? Sims have been tracked for decades and phones don't need to be on.

Looks like the govts *wanted* to lose these things temporarily.
