Nigel Grierson and Vaughan Oliver (as 23 Envelope) captured the cover imagery by spraying a can of car paint on the surface of water (and adding the odd fishtail), inspired by a scene from Andrei Tarkovsky's visionary film "Stalker". The band often left the content of the designs entirely up to Grierson and Oliver, so long as there wasn't any representational imagery--conditions that would influence their later work.
