so in terms of the secret / hidden message, details as follows:

A secret message is hidden inside this game. To activate it you have to hold down the Fire buttons on both joysticks when you power up your VCS. The menu will now turn into the following message: (six hearts) I LOVE YOU BERNADETTE I LOVE YOU BERNADETTE (six hearts)

If you now move the left joystick while still holding down the buttons, the second half of the message will turn into: WILL YOU MARRY ME? SKID

Wow, I can't believe it, I actually found it. First things first, my apologies that its actually not on the river raid game as such, however the hidden message is on the "Super Hit Pack", that included river raid. These were the games on this cartridge:

River Raid, Grand Prix, Fishing Derby, Sky Jinks & Checkers.
