I've been seeing more and more talk of film making using actual film pop up around the internet. With Lomography recently releasing their Lomo Kino, and many discussions of 8mm, Super 8 or 16mm popping up on Flickr. I thought it would be a good idea to go over a few of the basic things to look for if you come across a Super 8 camera at second hand shop.

  • Started looking around for Super 8 cam's better than the Bell & Howell 491 I had been using for the past few years. Followed your suggestion and visited a couple of Goodwill/Salvation Army stores with no luck. But, a classified Ad website had someone in Ottawa, Ontario with a Super 8 for sale for $15. Contacted her, turns out she had three that were her Fathers. Got the cameras and two Super 8 Editor /Viewers - CanonAuto Zoom 518, Minolta XL401, Canon 514XL - Original Boxes and all.

  • @Brendan9674 That's fantastic!! I donated two 514s to the Film Photography Podcast @filmphotographytube and have been looking for anther to fill the void.

  • whats the exact name of this type of super eight camera?

  • @THDproductions Canon 514XL and Canon 514XL-s are the two cameras shown

  • Thank you for posting this! I got my hands on the Canon 514xl-S and this video taught me a lot. It looks like everything is working perfectly! Now I just need to get film :)

  • @enobale It's a fine camera! Hope you enjoy!

  • @bartsimpson67543 Yes, it's a very nice camera. The newer version of your camera (canon 814xls) goes for $3-400! And had the same lens! Your camera requires 2 sets of batteries, 1 set to power the light meter and 1 for the motor drive. The light meter battery should be a px625 equivalent. Wein cell silver oxide batteries are a great replacement & provide the correct 1.35 volts required for a correct meter reading. The drive should just run off AA batteries. Your camera has an 8x zoom f/1.4 lens.

  • i have a super 8 camera can you tell me anything about a cannon auto zoom 814

  • @rorrt Those Fisherprice cameras are something else, it would be fun to get my hands on one to play with.

  • @kylehazachode I've seen these, some neat little cameras. Lomo was also the mnfr of Super 8 developing tanks. However they get very expensive. I wonder how many cartridges of S8 you could process with the tetenal E6 kit?
