'Karabiner' Kar98K -- manufactured in 1943 I believe, and unfired for quite a period of time. Unfortunately it wasn't in a very good state; the bore is rated poor with a lot of pitting, the stock is very dinged up, the extractor is worn and the bolt release spring is inoperable -- hence the masking tape holding the bolt in place. The fact that it still fires, in (approximate) working condition -- and safely, is kudos to the German war machine and their engineering skills. I was very impressed! The owner will most likely restore the rifle to her former glory.

The barrel is chambered in the original 8x57mm IS (AKA 7.92x57mm IS) and the ammunition used was a (commercial) Highland Sports 175g Soft Point Boat Tail round which fires at about 2800fps I believe. The recoil was surprisingly light by my standards. The sights were far sharper and easier to aim than the Mosin-Nagant sights, though not as good as the volley sights on the SMLE No.I Mk.III.

  • Wow, a nice fixer-up there. Yeah, I was quite surprised by the comfort of the recoil when I shot my first Mauser...those damn Nazis sure know how to build a rifle LOL

  • @20thcenturyfilmdocs

Holy crap, how am I not subscribed to you mate??!!

As for fixer upper, I couldn't agree more! My friend has plans for it, starting with a complete strip and clean, and most likely a rebarreling - consideiring the current bore is apparently very shocking (lots of pitting and whatnot). Though I believe he can get a new unfired barrel for approx AU$350 which isn't too bad in my books. I think he wants to keep the stock as it is and not refinish it, he likes the wartime feel.
