OzCloggie (Jo Mulholland) explains: A Dutch edition of the book, Sans Famille, by Hector Malot, translated by A.D.Hildebrand and illustrated by George van Raemdonck, published in 1940, was a gift from relatives, when I was a baby, during WWII. It was read to me several times over, as a toddler, (at first with the sad parts omitted).
The book was very popular among my post-war generation, Having used coloured pencil as a child to "improve" van Raemdonck's illustrations, it seemed fitting, as homage to the artist, van Raemdonck ( and to my mother, who made me love this adventure, of the two boys and Vitalis, roaming through France) to again colour in the illustrations but on canvas and in oil.
Thanks to Martin for producing this great video and Nicky and Johanna for making me smile.
