Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States, was assassinated in Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C., on the evening of 14th April, 1865, while watching a performance of "Our American Cousin", starring the renowned actress Laura Keene. The assassin, John Wilkes Booth, was also an actor; he came from a very respected theatrical family. He leaped from the balcony onto the stage, breaking his leg in the process. Nevertheless, he managed to escape, only to be caught and killed several days later.
