On April 30th, Ensemble 64.8 played a concert that highlighted percussion works composed by Iannis Xenakis. The finale of the concert was a performance of the percussion sextet, Persephassa.
This is the first part of three video segments due to the youtube time limit of ten minutes. The entire work is nearly thirty minutes in length and made up the entire second half of our concert.
The piece was commissioned in 1969. The score calls for the players to surround their audience in order to create a spatial experience. Xenakis makes use of the three families of instruments found in percussion - skins, woods, metals. He also incorporates 'galet du mers" (sea stones) towards the very end of the work. Our stones came from the Chena River.
The performers are all members of Ensemble 64.8.
