The wonderful Mirella Freni sings
"Adieu forets" (sung in russian) from Act I of "The Maid of Orleans" by Tchaikovsky.

Mirella Freni (Jeanne d'Arc)

Palermo 2003

She also sang this role with the National Opera in Washington D.C. in 2005 at the age of 70. Amazing!

  • What she does at 68, singers in today's world not only can't do, but couldn't do at 28. This is the result of solid technique, specifically avoiding certain roles, and not letting anyone tell her otherwise. She's a model of artistry for all of us.

  • Amazing! Her voice sounds heavier and more aged, but that's only because we know she had that perfectly pristine and bright lyric voice. With such technique and wonderful voice, with a more dramatic sound, she sings just as well as the best younger singers. Brava!

  • I can only hope my voice not only holds up but improves the way hers has. The voice may no longer have the youthful gleam, but it more than compensates in dramatic impulse and communication of the text. Freni may have been somewhat of the "park and bark" physical acting school, but her voice has more pure acting in it than any younger diva around can muster. Bravo, Mirella. May you thrill us forever!

  • IT IS A PITY THAT BEING SO WONDERFUL ARTIST WITH SUCH AN AMAZING VOICE AT THIS AGE....SHE NEVER WAS A GOOD ACTRESS.....IN THAT SENSE VERY MUCH LIKE JOAN SUTHERLAND....I PREFER LISTEN TO THEM THAN WATCHING THEM ....!!!!!1111111

  • Unica a 68 anni con una voce così bella e ancora fresca!!!!!! Mitologica Freni!!!!!!

  • wow wow wow and more wow!!!

  • unica,ti amo mirella

  • unica

  • INCREDIBILE! BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA!

  • Absolutely mesmerizing, the condition of the voice as well as the gripping interpretation.Has anyone noticed that Tchaikovsky, where the French text goes "au champ d'honneur", quotes Chopin's well known "Military Polonaise"? I am sure this is no coincidence, it is no plagiarism, only a beautiful piece of inspiration from a great predecessor.

  • Such extraordinary longevity !

  • Brilliant, an inspiration to us all!
