Close to the river and at the heart of the old city of Bangkok is Wat Phra Kaew lying within the grounds of The Grand Palace.
This is a "must see" whenever I am in Bangkok. Wat Phra Kaew or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, also officially known as Wat Sri Rattana Satsadaram is the most important Buddhist temple in Thailand. The temple enshrines the Phra Kaew Morakot (the Emerald Buddha), the highly revered Buddha image, carved from a single block of jade. The Phra Putta Maha Mani Ratana Patimakorn is a Buddha image in the meditating position dating from the 15th century.....legend holds that the statue originated in India and is quite small in size. The image is raised high on a series of platforms and no one is allowed near the Buddha, except HM the King. A seasonal cloak, changed three times a year to correspond with the summer, winter and rainy season covers the statue. The changing of the robe is performed by the monarch to bring good fortune to the country during
each season..........
The Temple dates to 1785, the year the capital was moved from Thonburi to Bangkok. Strangely, though, the temple does not have any resident monks nor living quarters for them; this is a "show piece" of holy buildings statues and pagodas......
