Would like to recommend the book, Ceremony, by Leslie Silko. It's a novel about a native American who returns emotionally ans spiritually damaged by his experiences in the Pacific in World War ll. It a very compelling story with a lot of the anguish of an Ira Hayes in it.

@otlclips HA! I should have checked the depth of the water before I dived in. I realized my error when I visited your playlist and saw your greybeard list of music. Personally I prefer Patrick Sky's version of this but both these versions preserve the ballad nature of the lyrics. The lyrics are a poem, a reflection; Cash, as magnificent as he is, treated it as mere entertainment, a tune. But heck, even Bobby Lane threw an interception now and then.

@yasukomcleod I'm in my 60s. How much older do you figure I need to get? LOL.
-
@otlclips You think that because you're young. When you get older you will gain introspection and come to appreciate this version.
-
@gdkeen I stand corrected. Patrick Sky's version has been posted.

@gdkeen I agree this is a real good version, better in style than the other versions here; another version, in the same style as this, was done by Patrick Sky. Sky's version is not shown here, I have it on a compilation of American folk songs called, Folk Songs America, published twenty some years ago by Sony Music. I think I ordered it from NPR.

Out of the six men that are immortalized in the famous flag raising photo over Iwo JIma three died through the remainder of the battle. I'm glad Towns did a song about Ira. If yall like to read i recommend Flags of Our Fathers. The movie is pretty good too.
I feel like I can't rate this highly enough. I'm frustrated that this video doesn't hve 70million views, because it deserves it, for it's message and it's BRILLIANT composition
