Hey people - kind of a response to a message I recevied a few days back. I find an old White Dwarf (From 1986) whilst cleaning up ... absolutely a different mag then what we see today!

My question, what wargaming magazine do you read?

Cheers
Viv

  • I subscribe to "Wargames Soldiers and Strategy" magazine. Occasionally buy "Miniature Wargames" or "Battle Games".

Battle Games has a great podcast called "View from the Veranda." Worth listening to while you paint if you love miniature wargaming.

There is a lot of stuff out there once people break the GW crack addition. Have a look at the SAGA rules from Gripping Beast Miniatures. The rule book sold out on release. It's an awesome game where only need about 30 miniatures to play.

  • I used to read wargaming magazines.. Then i got an arrow in the knee.

  • the thing is i know it was cool but they started in different times, now it make complete sense they don't advertise competitors products

  • White Dwarf was great back in the 80's when they covered AD&D, Traveller, Judge Dredd RPG, and Call Of Cthulhu amongst other RPG's....I wouldn't wipe my arse with it now or by any GW products for that matter, they are the Starbucks of the gaming industry.

  • Sad as it may sound, i still have most of my 1980's White Dwarf mags....oops!!

Wargames Illustrated has now got stuck in the flames of war rut, page after page of FOW. Shame cos it used to be a great magazine:(

  • reminds me of looking through the old Dragon Magazines, nothing like the media add blitz we get these days

  • Games Workshop didn't even have a product range beyond the Warhammer rules back then, did they?

I say this having just checked my bookshelf and found Issue No. 7, June/July 1978!

I'm sure I have an even earlier one stashed away somewhere... And yes, I am actually that old.

  • Ahh man thats when white dwarf was totaly awsome :-)

The Virgin Games on oxford street used to be one of the bigest RPG / wargame retailers in London.

  • Steve Jackson is my homeboy. :)

  • @Hammerpaints "The Panzergrenadier divisions were organized as combined arms formations, usually with six battalions of truck-mounted infantry organized into either two or three regiments, a battalion of tanks, and an ordinary division's complement of artillery, reconnaissance units, combat engineers, anti-tank and anti-aircraft artillery, and so forth." im not saying fow cant be a decent historical game .im just saying that you very rarely see actual historically sound armies .

  • @Hammerpaints "Of 226 panzergrenadier battalions in the whole of the German Army, Luftwaffe and Waffen SS in September 1943, only 26 were equipped with armoured half tracks, or just over 11 percent. The rest were equipped with trucks." man the german army only had 3 sturmtigers in one place when they flattened Warsaw.the entire Arden offensive only had 7.and you think getting 3 on a board in an av game is Representative of a WWII engagement ?

  • @Brainleaf74 iam not one to keep replying all the time to these things.but ok .Yes i do play .alot of flames and read alot of books.and all armies in the battle front range have had careful consideration to these unique tools like sturmtigers wher you can only ever feild 3 in one list.that to me kinda shows limeted.and the panzer gran coment ... id say you would have to re read ya history on that . any ways i still would have to disagree on the original comment that you made no offences intended
