Jackie Wilson - I'll Be Around (Original Stereo)

It is sometimes interesting how certain songs come to be. In the case of "I'll Be Around", the idea for the song came to composer Alec Wilder riding in a taxi in Baltimore, Md., and he said it only took 20 minutes to finish it (although the lyrics took much longer). It was published in 1942 and became a war-time hit for many artists including the Mills Brothers and Glenn Miller's Army Air Corps Band featuring Johnny Desmond. In 1962 Jackie Wilson delivered this magnificent vocal of one of the prettiest songs to emerge from the 1940's.

I think Mr. Wilson was headed for Opera Singing, I may be wrong. But this man was one of the really original heart throbs. Women really acted crazy when he came to Chicago. He was extremely talented an exciting show. I saw him at the "Club" in 1969 after his fan base had dwindled. You could count the people there but Mr. Wilson still dazzled the place. Then I met him at the Conrad Hilton the next year. Such a gentleman. Beautiful song too and thanks. :D

@9876543217303 Jackie had an "operatic" type voice, one of the few with that talent who also sang rhythm and blues. His recording of "Night", which was very operatic in nature was a big hit for him.

What made Jackie so great is that he did not limit himself to any one style of music. If he heard someting he liked, he recorded it. I never considered him a Rock & Roll singer or R & B singer & especially not a "Soul Singer". Jackie could & did it all. From operatic melodies to the standards. Many "critics' say his choice of material was inferior. NOT AT ALL. He was just singing great songs that didn't get airplay. Today, all those "bad" songs are hugely popular on Youtube.

Just imagine what his career would have been like in Opera. Move over Pavarrotti, (RIP), Placido Domingo, and the other big names in Opera. Jackie could have sang with all of them! He had such a versatile and powerful voice.

@Nocaro  Absolutely right. It's been a while but I think I did read that his mother was trying to gear him towards opera. That quality really blended uniquely with his rhythm and blues music form. That's why you just won't find another like him in this lifetime. I'll be back and visiting other uploads of this wonderful man. Thank you for your response! :D
