The University of Wales holds an annual Celebration event in Cardiff to mark the achievements of students graduating with validated awards. This year, on Friday 1 May, more than a thousand guests from as far away as China and Japan and as close as England and Scotland, gathered at Cardiff City Hall to watch as the graduates were formally presented to the Universitys Vice Chancellor, Professor Marc Clement.
The University also awarded two honorary degrees to Stefano Pessina, Executive Chairman of Alliance Boots, and to Rebecca Evans, the Welsh opera singer. Whilst ordinarily, a degree of the University is obtained by fulfilling various academic requirements, honorary degrees are awarded in recognition of achievements in academia, the arts, literature, science, commerce and industry, professional life, and service to the public or to the University. Although the University is eager that distinguished achievement in Wales or for the benefit of Wales is singled out for recognition, it does not limit its awards to people living and working in Wales or of Welsh origin. The Honorary Graduates reflect the nature of the University as an institution with both national and international dimensions.
