Mac. Windows. iPhone. Developers say it could become the third big computing platform, and it fits in your pocket. Here's there reaction to Steve Jobs' announcement of Apple's second foray into the smartphone market.
But I doubt it'll dominate over the Nintendo DS or the Sony PSP for mobile gaming unless all games use the accelerometers for most or all of the control and that's not practical for a few genres. You could make use of the screen for controls, but if you have to make buttons on the screen, then that can cost the graphics some real estate.
Plus, there's the pesky problem with sneaky licensing terms on purchased downloaded media versus physical media.
AT&T assumes some of the costs of the phone to allow for a lower retail price. Then AT&T recoups what they spent through the profit they will collect when they lock buyers in on a contract agreement. Otherwise, if you buy the phone without a contract, you will pay the full price which is higher than $199 for an 8 GB phone.
This tactic is not new, so it doesn't make Apple a genius. But, it is still a good idea to spurn adoption and greater market share.

you do know that the plastic back is cheaper to put on and either way they are raising their price quite a bit and also the low price means more apple customers, talk about great marketing strategies
