On September 3 2011 Brian Matthew in BBC Radio 2s SOTS presented a demo with PJ Proby auditioning to join The Crickets.
But is it really PJ Proby singing here? I know Proby is versatile and can imitate anybody and, as producer Jack Good once said, Proby can sing the pants off any singer in the world, including himself. But frankly, I am not sure. I tend to think this singer is in fact NOT Proby. But...
But listen and judge for yourselves!

  • Also - ist das nun PJ Proby, oder nicht???

  • @MyKeetje Nicht!

  • THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT P.J.PROBY HOW CAN A PERSON LIKE BRIAN MATTHEW BELIEVE THAT ?? To upload it without any reaction ....??? Not the first time even "Probyans" can´t notice the difference....Strange

  • @BearGrove Welcome to my channel! No, it isn´t Proby - but a very good song, don´t you think?

  • @BearGrove

Brian retracted this claim on the show on 29th October, saying the contributor who sent in the story was normally reliable.

  • The vocalist could be a guy called Earl Sinks. For a while he was the lead singer with The Crickets

  • P.J. has said it's not him but suggested it could be Trini Lopez or even Peter James. It's another mystery!

  • Oh - vielen Dank!

  • This is...NEVER PJ , The tone in the guys voice is nothing remotely like PJ's. Even though pj as many different vocals styles its not him. good voice on the singer though

  • @Lindgren33 It's a fantastic song.Supposedly sung by Ronnie Smith who replaced Buddy for a few weeks after his tragic plane crash on the tour. By 1962 Ronnie had serious drug problems & in October of that year hung himself at the age of 24.

  • @manjadolan Many thanks, Manja. The problem is solved with the comment from PJ Proby. Now I wonder who the singer is? And since it is a good song I think I, at least for a while, will keep it uploaded here on Youtube.
