In order for the Shenandoah National Park to be created, nearly 600 families had to move from their mountain homes. For two centuries, they inhabited and cultivated that land. But in the early 1900s, Virginia was recovering from the chestnut blight, the stock market crash, and the Great Depression. Creating a national park, it was thought, would revive the spirit of Virginia.
