PURE SWEET HELL tells the story of cyclocross, a sport that has emerged as bike racing's punk rock cousin. Told from an insider's perspective, the filmmakers traveled to 'cross competitions throughout North America, dug up vintage photos and film footage, and followed 'cross luminaries Justin Robinson, Gina Hall, Barry Wicks and Rick Hunter. Shot entirely on Super 8 and supported by experimental rock music, PURE SWEET HELL surfaces both the strong community behind the solitary sport and the grace that arises amidst all of its grit.

  • I am just getting into CX this year, and I am building my own bike right now. It is a big brand name bike, and i am not sure what type of shoe and pedals to get. Any ideas? thnx

  • @pdp110 I am not actually an expert in riding CX but I think most racers use an egg beater type of clip that is very forgiving of mud. You want a shoe you can run in of course. I'd definitely consult some local racers and you might want to have your cleats professionally fitted (it can really make a difference on your knees). Good luck!

  • can you use a mountain bike, or is it better to use a road bike with knobby tires?

  • Most courses give an advantage to a cx bike because at least a 1/3 of the course is on pavement but many beginners start out on mountain bikes and do just fine that way (until they are hooked).

  • i have a single speed 70's le tour...

    cani use that for cyclo?

  • Many of the Cyclocross races include a single speed and/or open category. At the crosscrusade in Portland, Oregon, I've seen racers on BMX, mini-bikes, and tall bikes.

Personally, I'd want some gears. But it's better to use what you have until you know what you need/want.

  • 1:25 LMAO, Super drafter!! How is this "fair" comp??

  • @DopeEd you supposed to land on the inner-leg thigh then scoot over to position.

  • Cyclocross on a mtn bike is not cyclocross...

  • i would love to do cyclocross but i dont want to hurt my balls with that flying mount

  • @shininghours - It all boils down to the CX origin. It all started in Belgium, get from point A to point B on a bike, over any surface presented by the route you choose. Dismounting, mounting, bunny hopping, sandpits, mud pits, it's all part of CXing.

  • I never heard of cyclocross till today. Can someone explain, what's up with the parts where they have to carry the bikes?
