A hybrid between two optical devices, the praxinoscope (the inner circle of mirrors) and the zoetrope (the outer circle of slits).

  • Great work - amazing that you have 48 frames - well done!! I have also been making a praxinoscope (not finished yet) - and i was wondering about motion blur. Your solution with the the zoetrope slits works brilliantly. I'm only making a 12 frame one - and found that I had some motion blur. I made a few adjustments and put the images closer to the mirrors - and this got rid of it.... i wondered if this solution would work with so many more frames? ... just a thought.

  • @hindester @hindester Thanks. The zoetrope slits were a complete afterthought, a last ditch attempt (thankfully a lucky one) to get rid of the blur. I could try putting the images closer like you say, definitely worth giving a go. I think maybe part of the reason for the motion blur might be the lack of difference in angle between the mirrors due to the large number of them. Your solution might work though, I'll try it. :)

  • That is really impressive. I know some time went into getting such a fine result. Now I want more.

  • @askwoodman Thank you! I became lazy with the actual animation after I'd put all that work into it. You upload your dovetail vid and I'll make a proper animation for this. Deal?! haha

  • Nice. I love that machine.

  • @TheBunnymix Hi, sorry about the delay in replying. djbethell is a good friend of mine, he's just joking around! The slots are about 3mm wide. I experimented with different widths, the wider you go, the more blur you get and the narrower, the less light you get. I went pretty narrow because you can shine a light on the images to tackle that, but blurriness really does spoil the viewing quality I find.

It can spin however fast you push it round, I don't have anything powering it.

Sorry!! I wanted djbethell to have a 'bad reaction' not yours.

It's very cool. How fast did it spin? And how wide were the slots?
