Shopping in Budapest can be an adventure and a challenge. It is not unusual to be as surprised by what you can find as you are by what you cannot find. A wide variety of shops can be found on the busy streets, from familiar chains and designer stores to small shops selling unique Hungarian handcrafts or discount jeans and t-shirts. It is considered polite to greet shopkeepers as if you were entering their home.
In terms of produce, grocery shopping in a new country can be a fascinating and at times daunting experience. New and unusual foods can be found throughout the store, while identifying familiar items and ingredients can be challenging in a new language. Budapest features a wide variety of well-stocked grocery chains. If you'd like a taste of grocery shopping Hungarian-style, try one of the many large markets in town. These markets feature fresh produce, meats and baked goods at a range of booths and stands. Certain ingredients and products that are commonplace in one's home country may not be readily available here. Tesco features an international section that carries some such ingredients (Indian curry, American peanut butter and Heinz baked beans for example). In the end, asking other expats and diligent searching should lead you to the special item you are looking for.
