@steventurtle1963 atleast you didnt get what this one kid got at my highschool. he was pushing a board through the table saw and kept turning his head back talking to someone, and right when he turned his head again half his arm went in and threw the blad no joke, his hand bent back and he almost lost it. and almost lost 3 of his fingers.

I gotta say, after having watched some videos of the SawStop safety brake, I'm fairly convinced it's the way to go to help avoid stuff like what happened to you.
Here's a demo video of it :

The inventor even tests it with his own finger. Brave bastard I say. With something like that, a person could conceivably get away with a little cut rather than loosing a finger.

i once had a wire brush on a drill cleaning the engine bay on my car. the drawstring on my top was tucked in but fell out onto the drill. it wrapped it up until it stuck all the wire bristles into my chin
looks like you put your hand on top of it

@BornAgainEngineer Yep that's exactly what happened, I was cutting some timber into small strips using a push stick with my right hand and as the piece went past the blade it started to flap about on the table, my instinct was to reach over the table to hold it down with my left hand to finish the cut..... My hand got too close to the blade at that point.

i work in a cabinet shop and there are guys that have worked there for 10, 20 years accident free before doing something like this, all it takes is one careless moment.

@timequakezombie Over confidence is also a recipe for disaster, that was my
mistake.

After 20 years of carpentering accident free, I finally managed to injure myself with a power tool and it just had to be a table saw. I'm pretty fucking lucky. Right hand, middle finger, straight across the tip, about back to the beginning of the nail. Broke the bone. I clenched it in a fist and said, "that did not just happen". Well, it did, so I wrapped it up, finished the day(5 more hrs.) and went to the Hpital. Glued it back together, no stitches.
A much needed wake up call.

@ElvisClambake "that did not just happen" that's exactly what I thought.... now I'm very cautious of it.
