LAKE COWICHAN - Thieves trying to make off with siphoned heating oil didn't notice a leak in the container they used. The oil was taken from a tank on the side of Cottonwood street resident Lil Kerr sometime Wednesday. Stretching from the tank all the way down to the end of the road is a zig-zagging oil streak, appearing to end at a small trailer.
Eighty-five year old Kerr says she was stunned when she saw the trail of oil left behind by the bandits, but adds the situation is also hilarious when you stop to think about it. Neighbour Brian Avery, who snapped a photo of the fresh oil slick, chuckled about the smarts of the thieves leaving a trail for the police to follow.
Lake Cowichan RCMP are investigating. They say heating oil theft is more common than most people might think. However since many oil tanks do not have gauges that easy to ready, the missing oil often goes unnoticed.
