What prevents the cow from stopping in the transition from path->rotary? It doesn't look there is enough side-room for it to just get pushed aside....

You're correct, the cow must enter the rotary. There are some mechanical systems in place that if she bumps the side because she is not completely on the rotary, it will trip some switches in the system and stop the rotary until she is on and the person working restarts the rotary turning. However, most of the time the cows are excited to enter and this feature isn't needed.

This isn't exact, but two weeks ago they were running in the 7 sec range at 514 cows/hr, 8 seconds per stall (450 cows per hour) was too slow.
