Yes, there was a hurricane Hanna. It ran up the eastern coast of Florida in early Sept. 2008 and made landfall in the Carolinas. It didn't go "through Melbourne", but it did produce good waves, I know because I was in the water surfing them.

These waves were beautiful, I got dropped on my head bodysurfing them in Atlantic Beach and saw stars. Scary, but I should've rolled out and watermeloned it instead of shooting the barrel. Still, that day was a blast and deep inside that barrel floating in air was amazing until my head hot the dirt/lol!!!

Thanks for your comment, however the waves in this video were generated from Hurricane Hanna - a short lived storm. Hanna gained hurricane strength on September 1st, with winds of only 75 - 85 mph, then weakened. It passed the Bahamas on September 4th then hit land fall in the Carolinas on September 6th. These are the storms we love: just far enough off the coast on the way north. Tropical Storm Fay passed near Melbourne Beach on August 20th.
