On November 11, 2008, Ketinoa honored my mother on her 80th birthday with a video of Alina Somova rehearsing Don Quixote. Thanks to the Balanchine Trust, every Ketinoa video and that Don Quixote rehearsal video were removed from YouTube. Today, it is back.
On my mother's 81st birthday, my video presentation was a private video, only viewable by a few friends. Included in that video was the last rehearsal of Yulia Stepanova before her debut as a soloist. Also, included in that presentation was her solo debut. The rehearsal video and parts of her solo debut, were never shown to the public. Now the public can see what they never saw
These are the videos in order
1. October 16, 2008 - Don Quixote rehearsal with Alina Somova and Andrian Fadeyev being coached by Tatiana Berezhnaya Terekhova. Also seen are Irma Nioradze, Anton Korsakov and Ninel Kurgapkina.
2. July 30, 2009 - Final rehearsal of Yulia Stepanova, being coached by Alexandra Gronskaya, the day before her soloist debut, as the second wife in Fountain of Bakhchisarai
3. July 31, 2009 - Solo debut of Yulia Stepanova as second wife in Fountain of Bakhchisarai. Maya Dumchenko and Irma Nioradze are briefly shown.
4. June 5, 2010 - Debut of Yulia Stepanova as the Street Dancer in Don Quixote. She never danced the role again. Alexander Sergeyev is also seen as Espada.
5.May 22, 2011 - 3rd performance of Yulia Stepanova as the second wife in Fountain of Bakhchisarai. Her previous performances were her debut on July 31, 2009 and 8 day later on August 8, 2009. She had not performed the role in almost two years. Yana Selina and Daria Pavlenko are briefly seen.

The city of Saint Petersburg has a special place in my heart. It is the place where my mother died and my father was born, grew up and died. I live many months every year in Saint Petersburg, although I have never been a permanent resident. It is by far my favorite city and I have dreams of living there permanently. Only God knows my future. I will have to die eventually and the place where my father and mother died would be fine with me. In the meantime, I will feast on the Mariinsky Ballet.and my two favorite ballerinas, Alina Somova and Yulia Stepanova, and all the other special things that make me love Saint Petersburg..

  • Alexandra Goronskaya is a very attractive woman. She reached what level at Mariinsky? 2nd Soloist?

  • @palubob She is now listed as principal character dancer, but might have been a 2nd soloist earlier.

  • Thank you so much for all the videos that continue to amaze, inspire and teach so many people around the world. I can't help but make a observation. There are those, like Natalia Nabatova and Helene Kaplan who spread hate around them. And there are those who spread happiness - that's you!

Thanks again and Happy B'Day to your mom!

  • I love the fact that Somova dances with castanets. Not many companies that I know of use them, except for the Mariinsky and the Paris Opera, and it's a pity because I think it adds an extra flamenco-like touch to the already magnificent Spanish flare of Minkus's music.

My fave part @34:48 - Alina's amazing pas ballonné while a sleepy-looking Anton watches :)
