  • I have read that this opening is rated 9th. Thus it is one you do not see often. More used in club play vs. tournament. Apparently the inventor was at the New York Zoo spending time at the orangutan exhibit before a tournament when he decided to use it. When you look at it that way, it does have the appearance of wide outstretched arms like you would see in a tree hanging orangutan.

  • Yeah I've since decided that this is a fun opening. I'll never bother learning it, because there are far better choices with your first move as white that aren't so "gimmicky" but nonetheless, it's a humorous attempt at controlling the center and not altogether bad.

  • you shoulda said in the video that the Orangutan opening is just "Monkey Business" HAHA...good vid. You play on FCIS?

  • yeah I play on FICS.

  • i play orangutan, in begining nf3 was better den h3

  • at 3:06 white can take the knight with a pawn, then win one of the two bishops. So infact, you are losing material.

  • AT 5:02, Ba5 maintains the pin on his b2 bishop and threatens Bc3, winning a piece, to which there is no defense.

  • I recently started to play the Orangutan because I find it quite interesting to use. I've seen people falling for the "Bxg2" trap and I won their rook. I don't like how your opponent played 2.Bb2 attacking the E pawn. I would push the pawn to b5 to cramp black. When I play b5, most players don't play develope their queen knight and bishop, so I will start some queen side attack. Last thing, I dont really like how you trade the E pawn for the B pawn.

  • Interesting video. I looked up this opening on wikipedia. It seems its not completely unsound. According to ChessBase, in master level chess, out of the twenty possible first moves from White, 1.b4 ranks ninth in popularity. Keep up the good work!
